Wins & Festivals

Jury Note from Animator International

For the award, the jury has been impressed by the pilot episode of a series that is not conventional in its format nor in its production and distribution. We are awarding a piece that has high artistic value, and where the passion of all the artists that have worked on it is very evident in the result. The outstanding quality of animation as well as the surprising world and atmosphere that it portrays has led us to award it. We would also like to mention that the new way of financing the series inspires us, and to signal out the bravery of the creators in producing and distributing this work without any networks involved. For all these reasons, we award “The Rise of Blus: A Nouns Movie” directed by Billy Dao and Jamie Chung.

Popular Jury Notes from Kids First! (For Kids, Judged by a Kids Jury)

I really enjoyed The Rise of Blus. The beginning with the fish is really cute and the way he runs across everything to get to the bus or train that he missed is really cool.

Wow! That is all I can say about this animation! It is off-the-charts fantastic!!!! The imagination behind these images is just wildly fantastic - from the floating city to the characters. This story takes place in the future and the characters, the floating building, the cars moving across lines connecting the buildings and backgrounds are all super futuristic. Noticeable is how well the mouths of the characters move in perfect synchronization with the dialogue. In addition, the movements of the characters are perfectly executed. The details of Noun’s room are also spot on and appropriate for a young preteen boy. The closeups on his face - perfect. Noun’s traverse across the community is nothing short of spectacular and compares with any movie chase scene in the most extraordinary way as he jumps from building to building, grabs a ride on a blowfish, and moves like a Parkour pro. I like how the characters are different colors and some of them are in animal or robot form. The evil characters look really evil - with shark-like teeth, or heads that look like skeletons, and mean sounding voices. The storyline unravels a tale of how Nouns is approaching a coming-of-age moment when his fate will be revealed by the Noggle, but when he visits his dad at his work place, he realizes that something is terribly off. This short film is inconclusive at the end with a “to be continued” message. So, we will have to wait for subsequent episodes and I can’t wait. It’s that good!

The film’s message is that you never know who people really are or what they might be up to. I give The Rise of Blus : A Nouns Movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 5 to 12, plus adults. By Janie and Julie S., KIDS FIRST!

Some FAQs

  • Why don't you upload all episodes on Youtube?

Doing so eliminates all chances of potentially having a gainful acquisition of the film. it will always be available to nounish communities to watch in entirety via token-gated access.

  • Why didn't you find a buyer for the Movie yet?

These conversations have been ongoing. Often the rooms we get into, light up because of the unique nature of the film but also the uncertainty around the full completion and a brand new original IP is a harder combination to sell :) . We are working through the festival circuits for more introductions that can help with this.

  • Why is the movie so expensive?

Reiterating - It's actually well within the norms of micro budget animation films. Unlike Most animation movies budget, Nouns Movie actually falls into the category of a micro budget film (i.e. < 10mil). This is achievable because of entirely remote crew and the format of how it's being made. Our overall runtime is reaching about a 100 mins now.

  • Why is it 'Last prop'?

This is the final proposal which will cover most of the needed production budget for Atrium to make it happen. Atrium will commit full production budget for EP9 which is the final act of the film. Atrium will not be coming back for any other proposal (Ideally movie gets acquired to pay for more media properties in the same universe + Quack workstream is already self-sufficient going forward).

  • What are you doing as Next Steps?

We intend to take the project for Mifa presentations coming year and working on that material.

Kicking off another more-frequent Day-in-life-of series with our director(s) to showcase the inner workings of the production. Both of our directors are animation educators as well so this will work well as an informative series of how such a large production comes together. These will be packaged as smaller bite-sized content for mobile first (insta/tiktok/YTS).

  • What happens when Movie is acquired?

Atrium is committed to contribute budgeting back to the DAO in DAO native way, operationally participating through auctions going back into the treasury. Nouns DUNA also enables us to directly contribute back funds into the new
