+against current form as success of it is to big of a gamble given the parts that can´t be controlled to achieve set goals even if i believe team is very driven and will try to make it since it is a noble cause that unfortunately is not shared with certain govs, would feel much more comfortable in a streamline version that ended up with a nounish animal NGO in a bigger timeframe — @fattybuthappy
I don’t believe that the second stage expansion is the best use of funds compared to supporting existing orgs. Ask is very large.
This also isn’t something that Nouns is uniquely positioned to fund. It’s a well established area of charity already.
it's an ambitious and noble effort but I have to agree with Drew here
Since this is the second phase of funding for Nouns Shelter and there’s not a clear understanding of the proliferation impact from phase one, I have to vote no — and I would personally recommend that any project asking for a second round of funding focus on how the initial phase has proliferated Nouns in a meaningful way.
I think this prop might be an uphill battle with this budget and think it might be worth adjusting to smaller scale if this is not successful. But as I mentioned in my Nouncil vote, I think helping animals is nounish, but I would love to see better coverage of everything.
The Nouncil has spoken.
We discuss all Nouns proposals every week in our Discord https://discord.gg/fdjJpMeV6K. The calls are public and all are welcome!
You can find a link to previous call recordings in our Discord welcome channel.
Nouncil has decided in favor of this proposal, with 20 votes for, 14 against, and 4 abstentions. Supporters praised the heartwarming and thoughtful nature of the Nouns Shelter initiative, recognizing its potential for global impact as a public good. They highlighted the importance of helping animals and suggested regular updates to showcase the project's progress. Opponents expressed concerns about the long-term usefulness and potential issues, preferring to support local spay and neuter programs instead. Despite differing views, the majority believe in the positive impact and expansion plans for the Nouns Shelter.

benbodhi | "helping animals is nounish imo and this is an interesting approach. would love to see someone doing regular vlogs or something so we can see everything going on in more detail and meet some of the animals."

would rather donate and sponsor spay days to local shelters."*

I dig what you do and believe it's a noble cause with which I resonate. However, I'm voting 'against' to urge you to reconsider going beyond your region yet—focus your efforts/time on fewer things and master them.
On the other hand, the mascot is a great idea to make it even more compelling, though I suggest exploring including other nouns elements (heads, accessories).
I'd be happy to support a revised version of this proposal.
While animal welfare is a worthy cause and I'm thankful for the work being done here, I'm not sure that it aligns with what I believe is the core mission of Nouns.
As I've mentioned in other props, I think it's worth asking ourselves what we want to see as the outcome of proliferation. I personally believe that 'success' is not found in people buying Nouns, but instead in joining the Nouns community in some shape or form, be it joining the Warpcast channel, putting up a prop themselves to fulfill a creative dream, or getting involved in another nounish project.
In this case, the requested budget is substantial, and I'm concerned about how effectively this would contribute to growing Nouns. I also believe that we as a community should have a more clear perspective on charitable causes. It’s totally fine to simply contribute to a good cause because it’s net positive for the world, but how often do we do that, and how much of the treasury should be dedicated to this type of giving? Since this is the second phase of funding for Nouns Shelter and there’s not a clear understanding of the proliferation impact from phase one, I have to vote no — and I would personally recommend that any project asking for a second round of funding focus on how the initial phase has proliferated Nouns in a meaningful way.
I like pussy cats🐱 and hope we can continue to do something for this very important cause but at this size request, I can't be excited.
largely agree with lilfrog's vote. We should approach charity proposals as a more structured line item (if at all) rather than ad hoc proposals with high variance in amounts requested. Especially with auction and treasury at lows, we should aim to fund more props that (1) either help replenish the treasury, or (2) help proliferate nouns in a cryptonative way (ie supporting more on-chain/CC0/Open Source initiatives). voting against

The challenging thing about charity type props is that even successful ones will struggle to become self-sustaining. There isn't a path to financial self-sustainability -- the whole operation works through donations like donation we'd be giving through this very proposal.
The whole end-game of nouns (in my opinion) is for nouns to be the pinnacle of excellence in certain verticals. It's possible that "charity" could be such a vertical -- maybe nouns is known as one of the great non-profits. But how do we get there? Imo scattering funding to various props makes it challenging for nouns to build up a "brand" around philanthropic work. In order for someone to come and see how much good nouns has done, they'd have to dig through the proposals and see which ones were philanthropic. This added friction makes it challenging for nouns to build up brand.
Here's what I think would be great: as an org, we allocate some % of the treasury to philanthropy. We do this under an arm like "nouns philanthropy" or something that can build it's own brand independent of the larger nouns name. Then, we take from the vrbs dao playbook and set up a grants based stream where different orgs can apply to be listed as an initiative. Token holders can vote on how we should split the philanthropy budget and funding will be streamed to various orgs. This solves the sustainability problem -- as long as we pass an annual proposal to fund the philanthropy arm orgs can continue to sustain themselves as they do good. It also solves the branding problem, because all of nouns philanthropic work is done under one arm that can independently build it's brand and be known for doing good.
I've been skeptical of charity type proposals in the past and since the ask is quite big here my feeling is the same. However, I think nouns shelter is doing good work and if we had some sort of stream based grants program with a % of the treasury budget allocated to philanthropy I would be happy to vote for giving some of that stream to nouns shelter.
I believe in this team and appreciate the frequent updates they have been giving me on the first prop. I believe this can be a self-sustaining organization and have a long term impact. Expansion through Asia, then the rest of the world. I voted against the initial prop but they turned me into a believer.
I think these funds better proportioned to a spay and adoption program. Through already qualified outlets.
I appreciate the effort. Wild animal houses that need to be unkept by volunteers is not a vision I think is sustainable or cost effective.
I have friends who run animal shelters. They would Be overjoyed for a donation 1/20th of this size. And have been operating for over 30 years.
I don't feel that the two updates from the previously funded prop provide enough clarity on the work done and how the funds were spent. This is a substantial increase.
I'm also not a fan of projects noting collabs with "organizations" without naming and linking to them directly for transparency.
I've shared this with teams in Istanbul (lots of street cats and dogs there) and SEA and they believe the amount requested is very high and not justified by the work shown.
The last Nouncil call didn't provide clarity on the nature of the relationships with these other orgs, amounts distributed to them and for what reasons.
I would be in support of a smaller ask with constant and transparent updates on expenses and results.
Although we commend the huge efforts and love the work being done here, we believe the funding request is rather high. We recognise the significant impact this funding would have on animal welfare and believe there definitely is a refined proposal we would support.
We have concerns about the pathway to sustainability. Achieving a fully self-sustainable charitable organisation is certainly not an easy task. Understanding that the NGO takes 12 months to acquire and these funds will get you there. But, are the proposal funds being used in the best way to try and achieve this? Wooyee seems like a risky use of funds to generate revenue for a sustainable path, and the reliance on commercial partnerships is mentioned but unclear, seems to significant to brush over. If these don't come through and Wooyee misses, then what? Few other budget costs that also seem rather high here.
We understand in proposals there are boxes the DAO wants ticked, but when they come at a cost or take away from the overall mission, sometimes 'Doing Good' is enough.
Modest compensation for a great cause. Thank you for your all of your time & efforts. Would love to collaborate on some content pieces with esports when you're operational. GL!
Six months ago, Nouns Shelter was born with the passing of Prop 462, receiving robust support with 74 votes in favor and fostering a space where we could actualize our vision of helping save stray animals.
We invite you to watch the following video recap:
What have we aready done in the past 6 months?
Mini Shelter Movement: We have built over 300 Mini Shelters, providing refuge for approximately 600 cats at the first month across Shanghai, Beijing, and Changsha. These Mini Shelters are built with recycled PVC plastic and are produced using a traditional method called mortise and tenon structure. Volunteers maintain all the Mini Shelters daily, and each one is equipped with 10kg of cat food when volunteers receive it. After 3 months of usage, our Mini Shelters are still in perfect condition and have reached a very satisfactory level. If not damaged or stolen, they can be used permanently and help more and more strays.
Animal Rescue Support: We donated 2,000 kg of food to a rescue center, ensuring sustenance for over 200 stray dogs throughout the winter in partnered locations.
NFT Editions: We started to explore web3 technology during ETHDenver and created an NFT mint for Mini Shelter Movement Changsha. When someone minted our NFT, we created a custom mini shelter named after them and shared videos and pictures of the cats using the shelter through their wallet.
TNVR Program: TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-return) is the most effective and humane way of stabilizing and decreasing stray cat /dog populations. Our TNVR program has neutered and spayed 100 stray animals in Beijing, including cats living in our Mini Shelters.
Strategic Partners: We have established partnerships with the largest stray animal rescue organizations in Beijing, Shanghai, and Changsha, extending the influence of Nouns Shelter in major cities through Nouns Shelter campaigns.
Community Engagement: Our Mini Shelter Movement events rally 250 volunteers who actively maintain the mini shelters and engage in evaluating and discussing Nouns' shelter activities within the community.
Social Media Outreach: We've established various social media platforms both locally in China(Red & Weibo)and internationally(Twitter & Instagram) to share our journey and connect with supporters.
International Collaboration: We engage in active communication with international animal welfare organizations in the Philippines and Vietnam, to gain insights into the current situation of stray animals in different countries and to explore potential avenues for future cooperation. Notably, our Mini Shelter Movement received positive feedback from Dr. Peter Li, Associate Professor of East Asian Politics, University of Houston-Downtown, China Policy Specialist at Humane Society International. Dr. Li expressed interest in our initiative and held a productive phone call to delve into our organization's background and discuss potential collaborative opportunities in the future.

Now we're back and ready to take action! With our passion and plans, we want to inform all Nouners that we are committed to continuing the operation of the Nouns Shelter and are in the process of officially registering it as a non-profit organization.
We have developed a comprehensive set of plans for Nouns Shelter:
Over the next 12 months, the Nouns Shelter project will enter its second stage. During this phase, we will broaden our reach to markets beyond China, targeting Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and other global regions. Our goal is to engage local communities and encourage them to join the Nouns DAO community through the Nouns Shelter initiative.
Through the first round of project execution, we are confident that by carrying out independent projects for the public good, the use of funds is incredibly reasonable and transparent. This is the core and authentic purpose of our future at Nouns Shelter. We aspire that through each animal welfare project, the Nouns brand will gain more visibility among the public.
The Mini Shelter Movement aims to offer protection and shelter to street cats, ensuring their survival in harsh weather. By building relationships with the local animal welfare organizations in each city, we will host Mini Shelter Volunteer events in more than 5 cities and multiple countries outside of China at this stage. One of our current preference is Ukraine, if any Nouners have great ideas please contact and build with us.
During the previous stage, the Mini Shelter Movement received outstanding feedback and evaluations. When we organized offline volunteer activities, participants came together to understand the Nouns and the reasons behind their involvement in such initiatives. Since our mini shelters are permanent installations, they provide a valuable long-term opportunity to showcase the Nouns brand continuously.
Spring and summer are the best times to spay or neuter stray animals. Therefore, we will recruit volunteers to spay/neuter the animals in our mini shelters with each project campaign targeting 100 animals. Along the way, we will build relationships with local pet hospitals to secure cost effective treatment. We plan to conduct at least 4 TNVR campaigns in China and 6 in Southeast Asia.
After discussions with Nouns community members, we all recognized that the TNVR program offers the best opportunity to introduce the Nouns brand to the Southeast Asian market. Consequently, we decided to focus the TNVR efforts on Southeast Asian countries. We will collaborate with local volunteers and document the process through videos and photos for content production.
Over the past six months, we've been contemplating how to raise animal awareness and encourage action through engaging, easily shareable content on the internet. Our inspiration came from the success of Meet Quack and conversations with Supriyo. Because Wooyee's content is original to our team, we can initially experiment with minimal funding before scaling up our investment.
Content strategy We are exploring awareness strategies by developing Wooyee's intellectual property. Our approach focuses on engaging audiences with Wooyee-themed content, including original stories designed to inspire donations and increase awareness of stray animals. Additionally, we plan to design merchandise that resonates with our audience, further supporting our cause. We will set up social media accounts for Wooyee on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. These accounts will feature comics and 2D keyframe animations. We will collaborate with various Nouns communities, including Quack, Nounish, Esports, Nouns Amigos, Mucho Love, and others, to co-create charity content and events.
We will develop the Nouns Shelter platform as our primary website, serving not just as a display of our initiatives but also as a tool to expand our reach and impact. The website is crucial for achieving sustainable operations and will be our most important source of revenue in the future.
Establish the Wooyee Fund to accept donations from website users, which will be used for our future animal welfare projects. All expenditures for these projects will be disclosed online with detailed cost breakdowns. We will ensure both the security and transparency of the entire donation process.
As an onchain non-profit organization, we are committed to onboarding and are building so that donors can choose to donate using either fiat or cryptocurrencies. After experimenting with selling NFTs in the first stage, we found that the operating and publicity costs were too high. As a non-profit charity organization, we must prioritize our resources and energy on practical actions to help animals. Therefore, we decided to use our NFTs as donation certificates. These NFTs, symbolizing contributions, will vary based on the donation amount. Our innovative approach combines Web3 technology with philanthropy, and we are confident it will enable sustainable profitability for Nouns Shelter in the future.
