We are asking the DAO for 38.3 ETH to proliferate Nouns at EDCON 2024 in Tokyo, Japan, bringing amazing Nounish energy, awareness, and visibility through a series of unique activations and concrete deliverables.
We're presenting this prop to facilitate IRL and digital activations for Nouns at EDCON 2024 (Ethereum Developers Conference) in partnership with UETH produced by Nouns Cares and Problem.
The Nouns Cares team hopes to represent Nouns and execute a full week of Nounish programs in Tokyo from July 24th to July 30th.
We believe this week will provide a historic convergence of Ethereum leaders and community members for Nouns to engage and onboard, while focusing on relatability, relevance and interactivity.
EDCON is a hub for innovation and collaboration, creating a meaningful opportunity to grow ideas and align community values. By participating, Nouns will gain visibility, amplify our voice and showcase our strong, multi-layered approach to DAO governance.
This event will allow us to reach and onboard new audiences, drive the industry forward by collaborating with onchain builders and thought leaders, and highlight our impact and contributions.
The proposed programs and goals are as follows:
38.3 ETH, with a full breakdown in the Budget section below.
EDCON (Ethereum Developers Conference) is the essential Ethereum community event, emphasizing development, interoperability, and collective progress within the Web3 and blockchain sectors.
EDCON 2024 TOKYO highlights the symbiotic relationship between global Ethereum innovations and Japan’s tech advancements.
As the only international organizer, EDCON chose Japan as the 2024 venue to underscore the nation’s vital contributions to blockchain and Tokyo as its de-facto capital of global commerce and innovation.
Partnering with the De University of Ethereum (UETH) and the Shibuya Municipal Government, EDCON blends the international Ethereum narrative with Japan’s tech landscape to enrich both domains.
The Shibuya Creative Tech Committee and EDCON have formed a strategic partnership to create a subcommittee that will enhance EDCON 2024, which will be directly supported by the Shibuya City Office. This collaboration will unlock new opportunities in the global art and tech community by combining expertise and fostering creativity through innovative programming.
Set to unfold from July 24th-30th, EDCON 2024 will kick off at the prestigious United Nations University before moving to the iconic Yoyogi National Gymnasium — marking the venue’s first-ever time hosting a technology conference.
The best part? Tickets are entirely free, providing open access to contribute to and expand the dynamic Web3 community in Japan and beyond.
The Cares Club is a physical hub and experience powered by Nouns Cares and EDCON, hosted at the The United Nations University.
We are currently engaging with Ethereum thought leaders and EDCON hosts, including Justin Moskowitz and Cy Li, to ensure our strategies resonate globally and align with EDCON and the broader Ethereum community goals.
From July 25th - 29th, attendees will participate in engaging workshops with opportunities to directly support artists and explore the future of digital commerce and retail, in an effort to narrow the great divide between Web2 and Web3, as well as business, creative, and tech.
Each workshop host will have the opportunity to fully personalize and shape their own session, so long as it aligns with our overall themes of relatability, relevance, engagement and interactivity.
We will be proliferating Nouns at large, along with highlighting art and content from the following partners:
Furthermore, The Shibuya Creative Tech Committee's involvement in EDCON underscores important local support for blockchain initiatives and helps bring credibility to attract local buidlrs and Ethereum projects to The Cares Club.
Bordering the workshops, The Cares Club Gallery will display a curated selection of artworks (provided by the partners listed above) and merchandise that artistically align with EDCON's core themes and highlight the on-chain potential for creators and storytellers.
This exhibition is meant to inspire dialogue between creators and Web3 enthusiasts, creating opportunities for future collaborations. Additionally, attendees will have the option to purchase pieces of art directly from their virtual displays.
Frankie Colamarino, representing Nouns Cares, will take the main stage to spotlight the strategic significance of community-led initiatives within the blockchain space, particularly as they pertain to DAOs. This keynote will dive into how Nouns is pioneering engagement and innovation, firmly positioning their community members at the forefront of onchain innovation and include content and contributions from other key DAO members.
We'll also produce a special panel at EDCON hosted by key Nouns DAO contributor and member Chris Carella. The content and themes of this panel will be tailored directly to Chris' personal interest and history with DAOs, as well as his contributions and active involvement in Nouns.
The discussion will also aim to engage and inspire new community members by sharing our aspirations for growth and innovation within the Nouns ecosystem. This will be a unique opportunity for attendees to gain insight into the core values and vision that drive Nouns directly from longtime Nouns members.
In cooperation with Shibuya City and EDCON, we will produce and deploy a series of Nouns + EDCON Motion Billboards designed by Nounish artists and local DAO members in Shibuya at the world-famous Shibuya Scramble across from Shibuya Station (daily foot traffic of 2.4MM people per day!), leading up to and/or during EDCON.
The planned 7-day placements include a 15-second movie synchronized across 4 prime Shibuya Scramble placements (see graphic above) for 15 hours per day, for a total of 2 videos per hour / 30 videos per day / 210 videos per campaign.
The United Nations University is the think tank and academic arm of the United Nations, located in Shibuya, Tokyo; where it operates as a diplomatic premise with it's own international inviolability, not subject to local jurisdiction.
Key Nouns Community Member Chris Carella will be in attendance (along with Nouns Cares) for a series of meetings to represent the DAO, share our perspectives and contribute meaningfully to discussions with Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum.
Nouns + EDCON will host an official screening of Shark, Pickle, Cone, the first-ever feature-length documentary minted to the blockchain that chronicles the thrilling journey of working with Nouns DAO and a fascinating exploration of the power of creativity and community collaboration.
We'll look to secure a separate screening room at United Nations University or provide on-site seating at an adjacent venue for attendees to view.
Nouns will co-host the offsite EDCON Afterparty that captures the celebratory vibe surrounding the 10 year anniversary of Ethereum and onchain summer in Tokyo, with a super cool Nouns floatie and music by local talent and a surprise headlining DJ.
In partnership with @Tokyo / @Tokyo.us, we'll select a fun and unique local venue in proximity to the main conference venue in Shibuya and invite attendees to connect with the Nouns members and the broader Ethereum community.
In addition to aforementioned partners supporting The Cares Club, we'll extend invites to and integrate local Nounish groups, such as Nouns DAO Japan and pNouns, along with Warpcast's very own Tokyo DAO and Suntory Spirits' SakazukiNFT Project.
We're also keen on producing and displaying a Noggles floatie in the venue, symbolizing the playful and innovative spirit of the Nouns community to serve as a fantastic photo opportunity and central content piece from the event.
Required funding (38.3 ETH) is as follows:
Treasury for this proposal will be executed through a 2/3 multisig with Chris, Frankie and Will as the signers.
We're incredibly excited to produce this week of Nouns proliferation that will bring multi-dimensional awareness and Nounish energy to Tokyo and the local / global Ethereum community, while collaborating with key Nounders IRL, highlighting our progress as a DAO and welcoming new members into the fold.
Tokyo is one of my favorite places on Earth, and I can't think of a better place for Nounish community members to come together and activate IRL.
Hope to make it out there too! I want to visit the Doge statue :)
Hi guys, thanks for this one.. I second many of the against votes. i prefer more grassroots, intimate events- good luck.
Love it, best of luck educating, proliferating, and spreading the love <3
Cheering for Frankie & Will! & I know Chris will do a great job representing Nouns
voting for this on the basis that it's more than a simple conference sponsorship. it's multiple nouns activations at an aligned industry event done by a solid team of nounish mfers

Totally understand why we don't want to fund every conference out there, but I think we should make an exception for this as it's far more developer focused and not NFT centric. It's well defined with clear outcomes and seems worth it to me.
Generally agree with 40 about conference sponsorship, but I think this prop is worth it because of the team organizing (Pat, Frankie), the type of attendees who will be there, and the pride of place Nouns and Nounish communities will receive. If Nouns is to be the “cultural arm of Ethereum” as Seneca once said, then we have to bring the culture to the core Ethereum community and this feels like it could be a good way.
Frankie's last proposal didn't pass, and while I didn't support it, I can see how better focused this new proposal is, which aligns with the feedback he received previously. Despite the harsh criticism he faced, Frankie remained determined to learn more about the DAO and what it values.
The request is substantial, but so are the deliverables. While this might not generate the excitement Ben mentioned to attract Nouners from all over the world to Japan, it undeniably positions Nouns at the forefront of the conference, making it the clear center of attention.
Let's not forget Proposal 538, which passed almost unanimously…
Compare the work and effort put into this proposal versus 538. The opportunity to enable a group of Nounish builders is worth the risk of capital. glhf

i just don’t think big budget conference stuff has really paid off for us over the years and the voters have consistently expressed that over the recent year or so and while i appreciate the detailed prop there’s nothing about it in particular that persuades me to think we should give it another try with $100k prop. as far as conferences go i would much much rather fund a very small budget for someone who’s already going to just host like a nouns dinner or happy hour so that nouns folks can meet IRL and invite their friends. so something really funky and weird in a low budget way. this type of big budget traditional conference stuff i just don’t feel is how we spread nouns.
EDCon seems like a great opportunity for ⌐◨-◨ to make an appearance!
The proposers are certainly highlighting a relevant moment. However, after reading the proposal, I don’t feel any FOMO. While it addresses many rational and tactical business queries, which "make sense," it lacks soul.
It’s missing the weirdness, fun, and creativity—all the elements that ⌐◨-◨ represents: making crypto soft.
Here are a few thought starters for the proposers:
Voting against for now.
I appreciate the hustle you're putting into Nouns Cares and Problem.tv, Frankie and Will. And, for returning with a new proposal.
Clear proposal with an exciting team, and Japan has been a very active part of the Nouns community. The budget feels high, and I resonate with what 40 and Ben have said, but I still believe this can have a lot of positive externalities.

Billboards in Shibuya: Happy to learn that the ads will have a QR code call to action taking people onchain for a free mint that can be redeemed for toys and merch from other nouns builders. It seemed unnecessary until the team clarified this to me.
This is a talented team of builders with a great track record across various ecosystems. Nouns at EDCON is interesting to me, it's one of the more serious conferences that could use a bit of Nounish vibes.
I'm happy to learn that they're also going to be participating in Funding The Commons. FTC is very aligned to Nouns and one of my favorite conferences.
While I’m skeptical of large event sponsorships (versus more focused gatherings), EDCON is a very aligned community. I’m in support
While I'm a bit skeptical about billboards, I believe the whole package might have a combined positive impact. Attending IRL events effectively proliferates Nouns and reaches new players/fans—lasting effects and meaningful connections surge from these types of activations. Best of luck!

onter: FOR - great event for this prop. Having someone talk about this on mainstage with a panel somewhere like tokyo, which has technology everywhere. People already know about nft's, so talking about them and educating will be so much easier. Especially being there in person and other things like EDCON afterparty
tori: FOR - huge event that brings more than just irl eyes. Shibuya billboards are a great idea since it is more than just a convention that is designed for this type of stuff. Would love to see more of a breakdown of what will be in the event with the money used.
jess: FOR - I'm so excited for the team to be there, and looking forward to the content production that comes out of this. Is there a way to capture everybody's opinions before/after the screening of nouns? That would be super cool to see.
lunari: FOR - love this! (+esports :0). throwin around some rough ideas: raffles, art charity auction with a mini voting system to vote which charity it goes to, dinner/lunch party, mini booth to create/generate your own noun and print it as a sticker, interactive art wall for anyone to draw/add to which eventually gets minted, etc
The Nouncil has spoken.
We discuss all Nouns proposals every week in our Discord https://discord.gg/fdjJpMeV6K. The calls are public and all are welcome!
You can find a link to previous call recordings in our Discord welcome channel.
Nouncil has decided in favor of this proposal, with 23 votes for, 8 against and 3 abstains. Supporters emphasized the importance of education, onboarding, and in-person engagement, viewing EDCON 2024 in Tokyo as an excellent opportunity to promote Nouns. It was expressed that the current design lacked impact and could benefit from higher-quality graphics and visuals. Despite these concerns, the majority believe that participating in this event will positively enhance Nouns' visibility and outreach in a key location.

I don’t feel like this is any regular old convention and the plans look amazing. I can tell how much has gone into bringing this iteration to life and hope to see it happen. Everyone involved has a lot to offer and I think it’s worth taking the risk. The idea/budget did feel large at first, but I think they know what they’re doing. Japan is super nounish and could do with a lot more nouns exposure imo. Hope I can be there for this.
This is a reasonable budget for quite a bit of value. This puts Nouns and the Nouns doc in front of key members of the ethereum community while also providing new content for proliferation. IRL proliferation can be incredibly impacftul when done well.
I understand 40/latsko point and dont disagree.
HOEVER,
I dont see this as funding "yet another conference dud"
I see it as funding v2 of "Conferences by Nouns Cares". time to compare apples to apples and this execution to ETH Denver's.
would be willing to make hard calls after that. as I think Frankie would too. but for now lets take it to Japan!
the team deserves a solid v2 IMO. as most of the negatives of ETH Denver I heard brought up FROM Frankie and or agreed. not deflected. whos the whip cracker? Milad?
Prices seem reasonable as well.
I like how this proposal has multiple touch points. I'm not familiar with results from previous conferences sponsored by Nouns. Perhaps this proposal can include a noun onboarding event to its list? Could some type of workshop or meetup where people learn about $nouns or can earn $nouns be part of the itinerary? Would be awesome to reward people for participating in a way that can contribute to the proliferation ⌐◨-◨
I would be excited to meet and support the Nouns community in Japan, Nounspill and onboard new people to crypto and meet with the Ethereum Foundation to tell them more about Nouns.
I'm excited about this proposal for a few reasons && while I can agree with Noun 40 that we have tried big budget conferences in the past without much ROI, I would point out that those conferences were NFT focused conferences, where the audience is much different than a developer / builder focused event.
For the last 8 months I've connected with members of Nouns DAO Japan, pNouns and the growing Japanese communities on Warpcast (Tokyo DAO) and have seen the growth of Web3 in their region. The Japanese channels on Farcaster are consistently in the top 50 for engagement, this is something Nouns can and should be leaning into. By collaborating with Nouns DAO Japan & pNouns this proposal not only allows for high level Nouns proliferation, but also acts as an onboarding funnel for the Japanese community into Nouns.
I also personally think tracking stats and data is important, and something irl events should strive to include in their proposals, so to me NFC chips are a fun tool to facilitate this (although it only 1 of 4 ways mentioned in the prop). Also fun fact, while NFC chips have just recently become popular in the US, NFC chips (FeliCa) have been used in Japan since 2004, so its part of their culture to tap for payments / activations, so less of a gimmick more part of culture.... plus its more elegant to have an NFC chip behind a Noggle embroidery on a shirt vs printing a QR code on a shirt.
Another thing I like about this proposal is that it includes distribution for past proposals (viewing of the documentary - prop 73, 166, 526, distribution of Noggles & toys for Klim - prop 72, 287, 334, onboarding members into Nouns DAO Japan - prop 390)
Overall, I think this proposal can produce an ROI to the DAO that is greater than the cost of the proposal, so I support it.
Frankie's last proposal didn't pass, and while I didn't support it, I can see how better focused this new proposal is, which aligns with the feedback he received previously. Despite the harsh criticism he faced, Frankie remained determined to learn more about the DAO and what it values.

EDCon is a very serious conference full of thought leaders and founders building the onchain future of Etherium, Having NOUNS representing a robust global community of creators artists and terchnical visionaries in a fun and engaging manner would really open up a lot of new channels of connections and thinking for the the future. Getting these people NOUpilled and onboarded would be a huge win. The ask is small for the potential that can be gained. This team has a robust network and the ability to properly execute something like this and I feel that they will crush it and leave a lasting impact on the NOUNs legacy. What would the impact of some of our best people sharing a stage with Vitalik be? what about someone like Nigo? It would also be a great experience to have some of the nounders and nouners on the ground as well as the incredible nouns Japan community there in full force .
The screening of the movie might be more impactful than we think. We need to keep sharing the vision and impact that Nouns has and distributing it at these conference is a great way to do that.
