The assets look amazing, Coral continues to deliver excellent quality to Nouns. My biggest question on this prop is if game developers will meaningfully make use of these assets. That being said it's obvious there's been a lot of thought put into this prop and I am hopeful that CoralOrca will be able to drive meaningful adoption & use for what he builds. Happy to help promote via esports as much as possible!

Initially had concern with regards to demand for these assets but Coral shared more info that free/low-polygons city models at Unity store are having decent impression roughly 1000 view per week, altho unable to determine download rate.
Wish to believe Nouns theme 3D asset would have even more views/download + would rather bet on having these assets out there than not having them at all.
Swayed to FOR eventually.
I’ve gone back and forth on this prop, and I’ve leaned towards being in favor.
On the one hand, it’s not clear whether these assets are needed. They aren’t a blocker to games integrating yet.
On the other hand, we receive many props for games. By making these assets, we have a good foundation for these games to not only integrate Nouns, but also to show that they understand what exists from the Nouns community.
If these assets act as a guide, we’ll likely get more cohesive gaming proposals than we would have otherwise. That foundation is valuable as Nouns enters further into gaming.
have gone back and forth on this as well, but ultimately sold by the thoughtful design, delightful aesthetic, and memories of cryptovoxels circa 2021. 8-10 months of development should turn this into one of the most sophisticated free asset packs in the world, and who knows where that might lead. good luck with the build!
Also struggled to make my mind up. These votes swayed me to a clearer Yes.
CC0 building blocks. We've seen the 3D character models used frequently, I hope these ones find equal success. The Unity store is a great destination for them and I would also like to see the models in TurboSquid and other 3D marketplaces.

The Nouncil has spoken.
We discuss all Nouns proposals every week in our Discord https://discord.gg/fdjJpMeV6K. The calls are public and all are welcome!
You can find a link to previous call recordings in our Discord welcome channel.
Nouncil has decided in favor, with 20 votes for and 8 against. Supporters were impressed by the proposal’s potential to enhance the Nounish experience, particularly the idea of playing live at NOC, which felt aligned with Nouns' values. Despite some reservations, a majority believes that the asset pack and city concept are valuable additions to the Nouns ecosystem, providing creative and engaging opportunities for the community.

The proposal justifies the cost of development, which makes sense even though it feels too high still, then there's a round expecting game devs to make MVP prototypes for potential prize money from a small pot... That feels off to me and I'd like to see more rewards allocated to the games round to gain real game dev attention rather than just in the initial dev.Big ups on the actual assets and city though, so dope!"

I lot of good comments here that I feel but at the end of the day this just makes me want to fire up Unity and make stuff.
I like the concept of the artwork and the artwork itself, and also that it will be released as CC0. However it's too unspecific about what it's aiming for and the anticipated impact. I'm all for creation for the sake ofcreation when it's art. When it's assets / products / content, a strong proposition and some demand that indicates that these are going to be helpful tools is foundational to take on the work and, ask for funds.
It's an "against" for now. But I'm easily swayed to "For" if you're able to tie it together to something weird, capturing a moment in time, etc.
Are folks (game developers, artists etc) asking for city environment assets? For me, the ask is a bit high to justify something with questionable demand.
I love the idea of funding game rounds, however I think 1 ETH as a reward is much too low to develop any sort of game worth playing.
I agree with ben that it would be great if this proposal could be aimed at building something specific with the assets, then the cc0 nature of the assets would be a bonus. For example, imagine if the 4844 line doc came with a whole bunch of assets for other creators to use? That would be a huge win win. Would love for something similar here.
I'm going to vote for. I think after Orca's comments the proposal is more balanced (still think it could be better balanced tho). And has some incentive for promoting these assets.
Also, for me, this is not only about retroactive funding for his good work, but also to keep in the community someone who is giving so much to it. And more importantly, the star Noun of the video is quite cool, hehe
I appreciate the work from Coral, I just don't believe the price for this type of voxel work is worth it. I would like this proposal to be a bit more ambitious and try and already be building a game that will utilize the assets right away. RobertFishGirl had a 5e proposal to build on a Nounish Minecraft server and I the game can get to unique voxel buildings while already being a really fun game.
I do see the value in having these assets available for community creations. It is in important step to encourage new builders and projects in our ecosystem. That being said there isn't a clear demand for these assets right now, which makes it hard to justify the costs involved here. I would vote "for" with a significatly lower scope/budget.

lunari: nounish imo. I understand the concerns about the demand and would definitely support a smaller trial event to see what sprouts. funding for 3DNouns game dev also sounds great! good feedback from everynouner
katalyyst: I love the idea of a large amount of free assets being made available for anyone to build off of. They're colorful and you can tell a lot of passion and hard work has been put into this project. I think its super awesome and can't wait to see how coralorca's colorful work is utilized projects in the future!
jesscas: YESSSS this looks so amazing, and the fact that it'll be cc0 more than justifies this price for me. It feels almost like a steal, and we are all super excited at nouns fe brainstorming how we could use these assets already!

As someone interested in 3D interactive spaces (who also cannot create my own 3D assets), I love the 3D Nouns project, It has successfully transformed flat PFPs of Nouns into interactive 3D models, which I frequently use in my AR work. The low-poly nature of these assets makes them lightweight and ideal for smooth game and AR experiences.
The proposed city assets extend this concept beautifully. As a CC0 brand, Nouns have been interpreted in various styles, enriching the reference pool but sometimes causing confusion in art direction for game developers. with provided asset like this, its offering a consistent and lightweight style that aligns perfectly with 3D Nouns.
with this asset provided not only simplifies the creative process but also inspires game developers with clear, nounish aesthetics.
TL;DR: Epic outdoor cityscape with 500 nounish buildings and urban assets, free to use (cc0), for games, animations and more!

Exploring the intersection of Nouns and games is promising, but finding the right aesthetic and gameplay is challenging!
To support innovation and cut development costs, we want to release a modular, low-polygon, highly nounish 3D environment as a CC0 asset pack, and make it freely available for game developers and animators.
After 3D nouns CC0 avatars and AR nouns facial animations, our next step involves creating environment assets - aka a city - to complete a versatile art kit that feels 100% nounish.
Let’s empower game developers to focus on game logic with our ready-to-use nounish assets.
Not a generic 3D backdrop, Nouns City will boast an array of buildings and objects distinctly nounish, inspired by a mix of Eboy's pixoramas, the blocky charm of Minecraft, and GTA's urban vibe.
Rich in references to the Nouns project's history, communities, and prominent members, these assets will include subtle touches like nounish graffiti, urban props mimicking nouns heads (e.g., fire hydrant, trashcan...), and community-inspired shops and buildings.
The result will be a cohesive atmosphere for any games utilizing these assets, providing newcomers with a compelling entry point into the Nouns project's narrative.
Pixels translate into voxels, which are lightweight and computationally cheap to render with a low-polygon count, perfectly matching the Nouns’ aesthetics.
0.935 mb for a merged block "Townhouses"
1.5mb for a merged block "Townhouses + Skyscrapers"
0.7mb for a large building / 0.3mb for a small building
We can classify the assets in different types:
Buildings - Vehicles - Props - Trees
1. Scale:
We've fine-tuned the dimensions to ensure modularity and interoperability with other platforms, all while balancing resolution with scale, and keeping file sizes in check (often challenging with large detailed urban models).
The level of detail is consistent, and for that reason we left out interiors which would require a jump in resolution and make the files heavier.
We could consider a set of interiors as a separate proposal with specific files if we see demand for it.
1 voxel = 18cmx18cmx18cm or 7"x7"x7". For ex, a door handle is between 5 to 7 voxels high.
2. Modularity: Using subdivisions, we developed a framework of tileable blocks and buildings. Different building typologies can be populated within each block to create various neighborhood types, from downtown corporate city center to small houses and townhouses.
Generic Template
A:16-18 buildings per block with a townhouse typology B: 36-40 buildings per block with a small house typology C: 8-10 buildings per block with a skyscraper typology ABC: 10-15 buildings per block with a mix of typologies
3. Partitioning: We set up a logical file partitioning system that divides the urban model into manageable blocks. This not only helps with organization but also facilitates loading specific portions of the model as needed, reducing processing overhead.
We are aiming for a total of 19 urban blocks and 5 garden blocks, totaling around 400 buildings.
4. File Format: .gltf and .fbx allow both game/animation design and web first applications. We are also considering the use of JSON files to convert these assets into onchain assets using the Briq protocol on Starknet.
5. Metadata: For better managability, we will include metadata within each building files to store information, such as location in the original grid set up, type and levels. Naming example:
A-3_TYP_TNH_LVL_006 (Block Grid A-3, type Townhouse with 6 Levels).
D-2_TYP_SKS_LVL_012 (Block Grid D-2, type Skyscraper with 12 Levels).
We will make 3D Nouns the central hub for all related assets, offering an easy-to-use preview, and download functionality.
Additionally, we will publish the urban assets on Unity's asset store for free to make them easily accessible for developers.
We will also enable users to walk around in the browser using keyboard arrows, which should be fun!
3D Nouns will get a nice makeover, and we hope to make the community proud!
Our Nouns-inspired assets will enrich the next wave of blockchain gaming applications!
I'm thrilled to announce an exciting partnership with Briq, Starknet's premier NFT project. I will be leading the development of community-created content and adapting these nounish models to ensure a special place for nouns-related content.
Starknet is an exciting L2 for exploring onchain games, and the Dojo game engine is a cool step toward more Fully OnChain Games (FOCGs).
This is the frontier, and Nouns should be part of this innovative wave!
Example block (Work in Progress)
Each city block will be minted as an Open Edition, as a way to track the proposal's progress, and to send 50% of the revenue back to the DAO.
- CCO Urban Assets kit 34 ETH
Note: When considering pricing, we must account for the CC0 aspect. By releasing all rights, we forgo any entitlement to future revenue generated by content created using this work.
At the time of writing, this gives us an average prize at 260 USD per asset. Some assets take 1h, some take 6 hours to create. The assembly of all assets together into a cohesive a pleasing city takes many hours on top of that. The translation of nouns references into scaled 3D forms takes some time too. Exporting clean geometry as low-poly, naming, organizing, uploading takes time as well. Our ambition is to build a really cool city, with a lot of attention to details: that takes time and a lot of love.
- 3D Nouns file viewer and walk around
2 ETH to upgrade 3DNouns.com with:
- Nounish Games Round -> 3 prizes x 1ETH
Once the assets are finalized, we will open a round to all game developers, regardless of their platform — whether it's Unity or Unreal, Dojo or MUD — to create a MVP gameplay prototype using these assets. We will select three winners. Download the assets and build something nounish that is fun to play!
Total: 39 ETH
