Nerman: Nouns Dashboards
TLDR
We're asking for:
a. ) 16 ETH to fund development and maintenance of:
- Two Nouns DAO dashboards (a treasury dashboard and a fork dashboard)
- A REST API to provide data for the dashboards, also publicly accessible. Similar to nouns.id
b.) 1 Noun and 4 ETH to retrofund 4 months of work on Nerman
RECAP
Last December we submitted Prop 470 - Nerman Returns (also see Joel's VWR). A majority of DAO voters supported the proposal but we landed 1 vote short of the required threshold.
For the past 4 months we have continued self-funded work on the project, releasing several new features including support for Farcaster, Prop House, and Snapshot feeds. All of the feeds / sdk work is described on our update log. We have also been adding Nerman governance to more Discords, facilitating community participation in Nouns DAO from groups like Nouncil, Lil Nouncil, Nouns Amigos, and Nouns Esports. With more than 100 people participating in Nouns DAO through Nerman there are more active voters using Nerman governance than voting onchain in the DAO. Nerman processed votes regularly account for 30-40% of total Nouns voting in the DAO.
DASHBOARDS
We want to provide insight and utility for the Nounish community while also providing open source tooling that is useful and impressive to the outside world. After much reflection, and conversation with the community, we have decided that analytical dashboards are a high priority for Nouns DAO right now and we would love to build them with Nerman.
Using our SDK (Nerman.js) we have a mountain of Nouns DAO data indexed and available for use. We can provide accurate live data as well as historical summaries all the way back to Gnome 0. There are many useful values we can produce from this, as well as compelling graphs and visuals to help Nouners follow and understand DAO activity. We want to inform DAO decisionmakers, providing information and context useful to people voting, bidding, proposing, and participating in any other way. To start, we have plans for two dashboards: a comprehensive overview of DAO financials / treasury, and an overview of fork data.
The Key Values and Key Graphs described below are merely starting points. We intend to include the most essential data, no more, no less. In the process we will experiment with options and consult with Nouners to deliver the best dashboard possible.
TREASURY DASHBOARD
Our first dashboard will provide a summary of Nouns DAO finances by exploring DAO assets, in-flows, and out-flows. To do this we will combine data indexed from multiple DAO contracts, including the main treasury, payer, streamer, and legacy contracts such as treasury v1. The dashboard will include live values accurate to the latest ETH block as well as historical summaries of past data and projections for the future.
Key Graphs
- Treasury balance over time (see this design reference). A interactive stacked bar graph with a monthly breakdown of the DAOs assets and combined treasury value.
- Total asset value vs Nouns book value over time
- Outflows vs inflows over time, including future projections
Key Data - Assets
- Assets held - ETH, USDC, WETH, stETH, Nouns, Lil Nouns, etc. across all treasury and dao contracts
- Total Value of Assets (measured in ETH and USD)
- Current Noun Book Value (with and without treasury Nouns included)
Key Data - In-Flows / Out-Flows
- Total DAO out-flow summary (proposal spends, forks)
- Total DAO in-flow summary (ETH received in auctions, ETH transferred to treasury)
- DAO funds spending breakdowns by category, month, project, and wallet address / groups
- DAO auction proceed breakdowns by month, noun traits, and wallet address / groups
- Current month summary of all above data, as well as historical data + future projections
- Summary of live streaming contract payments
- Manually annotated proposals that are likely to recur to estimate future commitment
FORK DASHBOARD
This dashboard provides an analysis of data surrounding Nouns DAO fork functionality. It will explore the likelihood of and impact of future forks, as well as a summary of data from previous forks. This information will specifically be useful to people crafting / voting on proposals, bidding on Nouns, and buyers / sellers on secondary. This will provide an accurate value of how much DAO assets are on the table to arbitrage and what actions can affect that. We will include a basic summary of previous forks (ie treasury value and Nouns exited) but our intention is mostly to focus on Nouns DAO and future forks. We will also experiment with fork indicators, trying to find reliable measurements that indicate the likelihood of an upcoming fork.
Key Graphs
- Treasury value vs NAV - focused on activity after the last fork with a summary of potential asset arbitrage data and a forks impact on the treasury
- Visualization that tries to express the likelihood and timing of upcoming forks. This will combine a summary of Nouns auctioned since last fork, potential RFV for each one, paired with the current fork threshold and any useful indicators whether wallets are likely to fork or not
Key Data
- Nouns auction prices and book value over time.
- number of new Noun purchases associated with previously forking wallets
- addresses that have held Nouns through previous forks and are less likely to fork
- number of Nouns auctioned since last fork
- estimated total RFV on the table since last fork
- effects of dispersing treasury Nouns and budget spends on fork calculations, threshold, etc
- financial summary of previous forks (Nouns + assets forked, changes to treasury, net value gained / lost from all forkers)
- current state of previous forks (very brief) - treasury value, Nouns exited, Nouns remaining, etc
OUR TECH - DATA
We are building a Nouns REST API that will provide all of the data needed for the dashboards. You can view a simple example at https://nouns.id. This new one will be hosted at api.nouns.biz. Eventually this will be comprehensive and feature all Nouns data, but for now we will prioritize adding the exact data we need to make our dashboards. That data will be publicly accessible and anyone can use it in the future with a simple http call.
Our REST API will be built with our indexer in the Nerman.js SDK. This allows us to keep the REST API data live to the latest ETH block automatically. We will prioritize data and calculations that can be automated with the SDK to ensure our dashboards stay up to date with no manual work required.
Developers are more than welcome to build with our REST API data, and if they want more control over the data they can use our SDK and index their own version of the data locally.
OUR TECH - WEB DESIGN
Our team runs a web design company primarily focused on portfolio sites for creators in the film industry. You can view our examples of our previous work at ANOA.ca.
These dashboards will be elegant, simple, clearly Nouns branded, and part of a larger website focused on Nouns DAO and Nounish Community. Our goal is to be the public facing canon source of DAO analytics and metadata. Anyone interested in Nouns will find these compelling, and we also want to provide information that Nouns power users want to see regularly, easy to skim on both mobile and desktop.
We will design beautiful graphs with minimal, well-selected, and cleanly presented information. The treasury balance / asset breakdown on Merit Circle is a good reference: https://treasury.meritcircle.io/. A pleasure to read and easy to skim. We want to create beautiful dashboards that other DAOs are jealous of.
UPDATES & MAINTENANCE
Our tech stack is pretty simple. Our REST API can run on free static website hosting. Calls to index and update the data can be automated, and the indexer can run within Alchemy's free tier. Our database has minimal costs.
The main work needed to keep these dashboards live and up-to-date is to implement any changes when the DAO switches contracts. This isn't complicated work. If we add manual annotations (ie proposal categorization) we will also need a few hours each month spent on that.
We aim to build a website that is reliable and hardy. Even without contract updates, or manual annotations, the website will continue to function and be useful well into the future.
BUDGET
Development Team Costs - 16 ETH
- 2 months of work on dashboards from the Lobal Global dev team led by Joel Cares.
- 5 ETH / mo * 1.5 full time devs * 2 months = 15 ETH
- 1 ETH covers updates and maintenance until the end of 2024
Nov / Dec / Jan / Feb Retrofund - 1 Noun + 4 ETH We have been self-funding since Oct 31 (4 months now), and would like a very minimal retrofund for this activity, 1 Noun and 4 ETH. The Noun will be held by the company Lobal Global and we plan to delegate it to various groups experimenting with governance.
